Through sponsoring refugees and others affected by conflict in Africa at secondary, vocational and tertiary level, the Trust is developing the professional skills essential to building peace.

Postgraduate

Windle cooperates with British universities and donors to provide scholarship opportunities to African students at postgraduate level in UK universities.

Undergraduate

Undergraduate students are sponsored at local universities in Kenya, Uganda, Sudan, and Ethiopia, supported by UNHCR’s Albert Einstein German Academic Refugee Initiative (DAFI), government donors, trusts and individuals.

Professional and Vocational Training

Windle delivers a training programme in partnership with UNICEF for teachers in Southern Sudan, draws on specialist courses in Uganda to train teacher trainers and provides a wider variety of professional and vocational training opportunities through scholarships, funded by UNHCR, the Dutch, Swiss and British Governments, and other donors.

Secondary

Refugee girls at secondary school are assisted through the UNHCR-funded Peace Prize project in Uganda, and young people from marginalised areas of Southern Sudan are supported through a partnership with the Swiss Embassy in Kenya. From 2006, Windle Trust Uganda is implementing a programme funded by the Dutch Government to enable 3500 young Ugandans abducted by the Lord’s Resistance Army or affected by their activity in Northern Uganda, to attend secondary school and vocational training.

English Language Training

Windle Kenya provides English language training programmes in Kakuma and Dadaab refugee camps for around one thousand students per year, mainly funded by Comic Relief.

Windle is currently delivering an English language programme for 150 senior civil servants, lawyers and judges from the Sudanese Ministry of Justice and Judiciary in Khartoum, as part of a broader DFID funded programme for capacity building support for the justice sector in Sudan.
