Strengthening Community Resilience in South Sudan

Phase 1 of this Unicef-KFW project helped get girls back to school in South Sudan after Covid-19 increased the number of out-of-school children from 2.2 million to 4.3 million. Phase 2 continues on with the success of that project, creating safer school environments, training early years teachers, and working with communities on the importance of female education.

About the project

On behalf of UNICEF, and with funding from Germany’s development bank Kreditanstalt für Wiederaufbau, Windle Trust International is implementing Phase 2 of a Community Resilience programme to advocate for safe schools, higher female enrolment and teacher training.

Working in the states of Western Equatoria, Central Equatoria, Eastern Equatoria and Northern Bahr el Ghazal, the project will target 55,000 learners in 111 schools and features activities to:

  • Mobilise and gain support for education from the local community;

  • Provide additional teacher training (with a particular focus on female teachers) and support in Literacy and Numeracy;

  • Train Parent Teacher Associations to enhance school leadership and community engagement;

  • Distribute school supplies, including hygiene kits, student kits, dignity kits, “school in a box” and recreational kits;

  • Form Peace Clubs to ensure that schools are zones of peace and free from conflict;

  • Train early-childhood teachers working with children aged 3-5 to create a strong foundation of play-based learning.

Through these efforts, we aim to improve the quality of education provided to girls and boys, increase female enrolment, strengthen teachers’ capacities, and provide a strong learning base for children aged 3-5, upon which their educational career can grow.
