English Language Training for Teachers in Somaliland

WTI, in partnership with Somaliland’s Ministry of Education (MoE), is launching a year-long English programme at the National Teachers Training College (NTTC) in Hargeisa. Starting at the end of August, the initiative will support 200 pre-service teachers from regions all across Somaliland. Trainees will study four hours per week using a CEFR-aligned curriculum designed for classroom use.

  • The programme will focus on practical English required by teachers: giving clear instructions, checking understanding, managing pair and group work, and providing feedback in simple, effective ways.

  • Alongside lessons, participants take a baseline placement test covering reading, writing, listening and speaking so that groups are formed by level.

  • Progress is observed and maintained through a short summative assessment every six weeks, complemented by ongoing classroom observation and regular correction.

  • By the end of the year, the expected outcome is at least one CEFR level of improvement for the majority of participants who meet attendance and study requirements.

Graduates who complete the course and assessments receive a joint WTI–MoE certificate of completion, recognising both their effort and their readiness to use English more confidently in school settings.

The programme aims to produce strong English speakers from one single hub:

  • Pre-service teachers train together in Hargeisa, then return to their home regions, where they are able to access materials and use their learnings to teach students.

  • Through this partnership, NTTC, along with WTI’s Engish Language training, becomes an engine for improving English proficiency across Somaliland’s public schools.
