New Partnership Announcement: The Pharo Foundation
Windle Trust International is pleased to announce the reestablishment of our partnership with Pharo Foundation. Having previously supported our Postgraduate Programme by funding scholarships until 2017, we are delighted to renew this collaboration. We are now working together on a new education project in Somaliland aimed at transforming English language education.
About Pharo Foundation
Pharo Foundation is a philanthropic organisation committed to creating sustainable development in Africa. Their operations span Somaliland, Ethiopia, Kenya, and Rwanda, where the Foundation focuses on building robust systems in education, water, and economic productivity, aiming to empower communities and promote self-reliance through long-term solutions.
In Somaliland, Pharo Foundation has been active in improving access to quality education. This includes managing Pharo Schools, offering teacher training, and supporting kindergartens in Somaliland’s public schools. One of their key educational initiatives is the Pharo Secondary School in Sheikh, which provides a holistic learning experience. Across their work in Africa, Pharo has sought to transform local communities by focusing on systemic changes that foster sustainable growth and economic resilience.
Education Projects in Somaliland
Our latest partnership with Pharo Foundation focuses on the Supporting English at the Primary Level (SEPL) programme in Somaliland. This 18-month project is designed to enhance English language teaching and learning in primary schools, ultimately improving educational outcomes for students across the country.
Key Project Components:
Teacher Training: The programme will train both English teachers and subject teachers who teach in English. Through school-based training, participants will improve their English proficiency and language teaching methods, creating a more effective learning environment for students.
Curriculum Development: We will create decentralised, culturally relevant teaching materials that cater to different language proficiency levels, ensuring that teachers are equipped with the right tools to succeed.
School-Based Learning: Classes will be conducted at Pharo Foundation schools in Hargeisa, offering English language training for teachers from both public primary schools and Pharo schools. The training sessions will be led by qualified international teachers, with the goal of fostering local capacity.
CELTA Training and Scholarships: To further build local expertise, six undergraduate scholarships will be awarded to selected participants, allowing them to continue their studies in curriculum and education courses in Somaliland. We will also be supporting 2 students to undertake CELTA (Certificate in English Language Teaching to Adults) training, an internationally recognised language teaching qualification.
At the end of the programme, we aim to have trained 60 teachers who will be able to cascade their knowledge to others across the country, ensuring the sustainability of the initiative. By strengthening the quality of English language education, this project will contribute to the broader socio-economic development of Somaliland.
